Silver lover’s knot bracelet

The links for this Valentine’s bracelet were inspired by the True Lover’s Knot. A slight variation makes the links look complicated but in fact were easily made by the use of a homemade ‘jig’.

Like true love, the ‘True Lover’s Knot’ has no beginning and no end. Love knots are not just used for the expression of love. They have also been used as a means of proposing marriage. In ancient times, the man used to deliver a Lover’s Knot to his lover’s doorstep. If the girl accepted the love knot it would mean that she was ready for marriage and if she left it where it was then the man had been rejected.

designer tips

  • Use thinner wire and a smaller jig for links to make a necklace.
  • Dip the completed bracelet into a liver of sulpher solution and gently rub with a soft cloth for an antique finish.
  • Use beads on thin silver wire between the twist links for a brighter colourful bracelet.
  • The wire used was soft Sterling silver of 1.5mm diameter and 120cm in length.

Tools & Materials

  • Silver wire 1.5mm diameter
  • Hand made jig, torch, soldering block
  • Flux
  • Medium and easy silver solder
  • Safety pickle
  • Tweezers
  • Parallel pliers
  • Piercing saw
  • Self closing tweezers
  • Polishing motor
  • Tripoli and rouge polish

Step 1

The jig was made by hammering two nails, one 4.5mm diameter and one 3mm diameter into a piece of wood, 1cm apart. Leave 20mm protruding and then cut the rest of the nails off.

Step 2

Make a loop to go over the smaller of the two nails and wind the wire in a ‘figure of eight’ direction around the nails keeping the wire tight.

Step 3

After 3 or 4 complete ‘figure of eight’ links have been made, slide the wire off the nails and align the small loop end and cut through them with a piercing saw with a 2/0 or 3/0 blade. Complete steps 2 and 3 again until you have made 14 ‘figure of eight’ links. Make sure you wind the links in the same direction every time. Draw arrows on the jig to remind you. You will need 2 ‘figure of eight’ links to make 1 unit and you will need 7 units to make the bracelet.

Step 4

Wrap more wire around another nail of 4.5mm diameter to make a coil and cut these, again using your piercing saw to make 23 jumprings.

Step 5

Interlock two ‘figure of eight’ links.

Step 6

Then push them together as shown.

Step 7

Silver solder with medium solder at the two outer most edges.

Step 8

Flatten the links between parallel pliers and then align the end links and solder these closed using easy solder.

Step 9

Use 3 of the jumprings to join up each section, leaving 2 jumprings at each end. Solder all these jumprings except for the first and last of the bracelet as these will need to be open to attach the fastening.

Step 10

Make up a heart shape out of wire and solder half a jumpring to one side.

To Finish

Clamp a piece of wire 30mm long vertically into a third hand self closing tweezers. Paint borax on the bottom of the wire and direct your torch at it so it starts to melt. As it melts, it starts to ball up. Remove the flame. Turn the wire upside down and do the same to the other end. Solder the other half of the jumpring to the middle of the bar and attach the heart and bar to either end of the bracelet. Solder the last two jumprings closed.

Pickle for a short while in warm safety pickle, rinse thoroughly and polish. Use rouge as the final polish for a high mirror finish. Alternatively you could use liver of sulphur to darken the piece and then buff the high spots to give the bracelet an antique finish.
